A girl got on the stage and took her clothes off. Another girl did the same and they did some moves together while the soldiers hooted and threw money and the band drank at the bar. I suppose this is what Colonel Glue Eye had in mind.
A record was playing and the others were still dancing as weâd last seen them. I took Maisie to one of the booths where we sat in the darkness, her face pale and her scarlet dress glowing.
She said, âIâm sorry about that, Pat. Do I look a mess?â
âYou look lovely,â I told her.
âI canât think straight when I think about Tom.â
âI understand.â
âHeâs such a good man!â she said.
âSo everyone says.â
We were silent a while. The record had stopped. Ben and Signora Pitti were standing on the dance floor in conversation. Hetty and Colonel Glue Eye were at a table, heads together, and she looked happy. I felt Maisieâs hand on mine.
She said, âI want you to marry me.â
Her voice was quite even.
âWhat about Ben?â
âOh, I love him desperately, of course. But youâve seen what heâs like. Not exactly the nice, charming man you first thought. Weâre getting a divorce. Iâd get one here, but Iâm not sure I can or if it would hold up back home. Thatâs why I want to leave.â
âHow does Ben feel about it? I take it he knows?â
âDonât be stupid, of course he knows. He says itâs fine by him. In any case, that isnât the issue. Will you marry me?â
I was so astonished all I could say, stupidly was: âIâve got no money.â
âSo what? Ben wonât be mean, and, in any case, Iâm stinking rich. Youâd be able to write.â
âWhy me?â
âI like you ⦠youâre kind ⦠I donât want to be alone. Itâs so pitiful when a pretty girl is alone. Everyone says there must be something wrong with her and starts feeling sorry.â
âYou donât love me,â I told her, trying to make sense of a situation that was beyond me.
âDonât I?â she asked as if this might be a surprise. âDonât be so sure â Iâm not. Iâve felt the emotions that people call love but theyâre not reliable. Then again, Iâm not a reliable person â everyone says so. They say Iâm strange â a little touched, you know? Iâm touched only because I want something better but donât see my way clearly.â This was said in one breath so that she sounded urgent when she asked, âDâyou love me?â
âI ⦠well I ⦠I donât really understand love.â
Maisie looked at me sceptically then said, âItâs a washout, believe me.â
